Axé Boom Boom is not only an enterprise, it’s a social enterprise because we see the issue in the society of increased obesity and reduce physical activity amongst children and young people.
Therefore, we’re here to tackle this social issue.
Our social enterprise is based on the principle that all youth and their families, regardless of financial, ethnic, physical, and social background, should have equal access to physical, art and music activities that support healthy development. We aim to provide lasting solutions to children’s inactivity by supporting and building healthy and active lives for children and their families using the tools of Brazilian martial art Capoeira and West African Djembe drumming.
Why do we do that?
Increasing number of children spend less and less time being active, as according to BHF (2019) “by age 11, children are doing more than an hour less of physical activity a week than at age 6” when NHS (2021) recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity a day across the week for 5-18 years old. Stating that increasing physical activity among children is a significant public health intervention that can improve the overall health situation in the UK. “It can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%” (NHS 2021).
More facts
Moreover, childhood obesity is one of the biggest health challenges in Scotland and the evidence shows that younger generations are becoming obese at earlier ages and staying obese longer. The recent NHS statistics show that 22.4% of primary one pupil in Scotland is at risk of overweight or obesity (GOV.SCOT 2020). Childhood’s inactivity is one of the major factors for childhood obesity which currently presents one of the world’s foremost public health challenges.
Axé Boom Boom is here to find solutions to these challenges and we have some great activities to do that.

How do we do that?
We educate about active and healthy living using sport, dance, music and art as we believe that being active for live supports people’s healthy body and mind development. We also strive to develop confidence, discipline, teach the art of self-defence and value of respect and perseverance.
We run classes for children and young people as well as workshops and events for grownups.
For kids there are:
- Capoeira classes, after school classes and breakfast clubs;
