In June 2024 we completed a project called Creative Communities. This project was all about combining Capoeira, making music, making crafts and building our communities through art. The children that participated in the programme joined us in September and had opportunities to express themselves through involvement in arts activities.

“The best part was the kicks and cartwheels in Capoeira and Djembe drumming”
– Happy Participant
They were empowered through their involvement in youth-led activities and their voices about their local community were amplified through art. We worked with a group of awesome children from Dalry Primary School giving them equal opportunities to access artistic and creative activities.
“I really liked doing crafts that we could take home and show to our parents”
– Happy Participant

All children we work with have the chance to learn about leadership, as well as health, wellbeing and nutrition. We learned about Eat Well guide, train Capoeira together, made music and crafts and we did it all to improve their health & wellbeing. Capoeira was the main physical and cultural activity as it is a martial art that includes dance and making music. It’s a cultural art form that participants truly enjoyed as it gave them the opportunity for artistic expression through movement alongside learning martial art.
“I feel that I am more confident and empower to express myself through arts and movement”.
– Happy Participant

We feel that this project caused all to be better connected to our local community through art. Facilitators as well as all children at the project bonded well with each other throughout our weekly meetings and are more respectful and understanding of their community. The facilitators become more confident about their practice and developed a stronger practice of working with young people, engaging them with art and leading the sessions.
“It’s incredible to see young people enjoying art, working together and being inspired to express themselves. It’s a joy to witness that!”
– Kasia, our facilitator and Capoeira Teacher
We are super grateful to Youth Arts Open Fund for making this project possible, and to the children for making it so special crating art together and trying together!

Keep training and creating!
