I’ve had a really interesting conversation with our capoeira students from one of the classes. It all started with one student not doing a bananeira (handstand) because he saw others doing better and he said he’s not doing it because he’s not good at it.

Comparing ourselves is another topic that we’ll definitely touch up on in one of the newsletters. However what we’d like to talk about today is the Process of Progress.
Let’s explore!
I used the examples of when they all were babies and learned everything from rolling on their belly through crawling, balancing at furniture to walking and running. I also mentioned that at each stage they were cheered by their families; the proud mums, dads, guardians were cheering for them, saying how great they are doing! And this is also so important, we talked about that in this newsletter blog.
Sadly the older we get, we stop appreciating the Process of Progress, the learning journey that’s taking place when we do something new. And stop cheering for ourselves at each stage of learning!
I’m sure there are people out there who try new stuff and are great at it from day one! But for the rest of all us normal people 😉 it would be advised to notice that there is the Process of Progress.

So what’s Process of Progress?

Simply is the way of progressing towards achieving your goals. In the above example: I want to do bananeira, which is a perfect goal for anyone 🤩 the Process of Progress are all the activities and their outcomes that brings the person closer to being able to do bananeira.
Let’s break the Process of Progress down:
I want to do a bananeira, so first I need to answer some questions to come up with a plan:
Why do I want to do it? Because it’s a cool move, because everyone is doing it…
What sort of bananeira? At the wall, off the wall, with legs together, with legs open wide to sides…
How long I want to be in bananeira? 1 second, 2, 6, 1 minute etc.
Now that we know the answers, let’s look at what we need to do, here are some examples of things to do at the class and at home:
Train bananeira in all variations
Do strengthening training
Learn how to safely fall
Last thing is to plan when will you put training in your daily routine.

For children at our classes the planning is done by teachers however we always talk about all of the above to children to inspire them to think why, what and how they want to train! And encourage them to train at home!
Hope that’s helpful!
Keep training!
